A groundbreaking initiative led by the Costa del Sol Association of Municipalities, in which 13 town councils participate. The project’s goal is to use the latest technologies to foster new opportunities for these communities.

CLIENT CHALLENGE

IDOM and Wellness TechGroup were awarded the Smart Costa del Sol tender, which includes 13 municipalities in the province of Málaga: Alhaurínde la Torre, Antequera, Benalmádena, Estepona, Fuengirola, Málaga, Marbella, Mijas, Nerja, Rincónde la Victoria, Ronda, Torremolinos and Vélez-Málaga.

The main objective of Smart Costa del Sol is to build more efficient and sustainable cities through smart resource management. This impacts the social and economic wellbeing of residents and visitors, helping to ensure the sustainability of these municipalities, as well as the longevity and continuity of a project of this magnitude.

The project is part of the first round of Smart City proposals for Red.es in the “A Way to Build Europe” initiative of the European Regional Development Fund.

SOLUTION

In this temporary partnership, IDOM and Wellness Telecom have teamed up to deliver a multi-vertical turnkey solution, from the launch to the ongoing operation of its 15 components. The 13 cities that make up Smart Costa del Sol will come together to implement a complete digital transformation in this groundbreaking project.

The 15 components are:

  • Smart City Platform: connects the various initiative components and enables data sharing across town councils.
  • Open Data Portal: publishes project data so that citizens and organizations and refer to and reuse them.
  • Smart Irrigation: monitors water consumption and manages the irrigation of parks and public spaces.

SOLUTION

  • Environmental Sensorization: meteorological monitoring that provides useful information to residents and tourists.
  • Smart Parking: manages available parking to optimize routes, improve mobility, save fuel, and reduce CO2 emissions.
  • Smart Lighting: public lighting infrastructure management to optimize lighting in public spaces, reducing energy consumption and generating savings for the city.
  • Energy Efficiency: monitor and manage energy consumption to ensure efficient use of air conditioning and lighting in public buildings.
  • People Flow Monitoring: strategically placed sensors are used to measure people flow throughout the cities to better understand visitor influx  and the use of public facilities.
  • Tourism Big Data: Detect tourist behavior patterns throughout the region to improve value propositions in the participating municipalities.

SOLUTION

  • E-learning System: provides training via an online platform to personnel involved in the Smart Costa del Sol initiative and other relevant stakeholders.
  • Smart Costa del Sol Web Portal: An online space that generates awareness around the Smart Costa del Sol initiative, positioning the area as a Smart region while promoting the local offering and stimulating tourism.
  • Smart Costa del Sol Application: offers tourism information and other relevant features (transportation, smart parking, etc.) to both residents and visitors.
  • Flagship Spaces: versatile spaces to promote the Smart Costa del Sol brand and bring technology closer to residents and visitors.
  • Social WIFI: Wi-Fi hotspots throughout the region boost connectivity and facilitate citizen access to services while simultaneously providing insights on user profiles that help the local governments improve services.
  • Beacons: low consumption radio beacons enhance visitor and resident engagement with the local offering and resources by transmitting relevant information using proximity marketing.
