Alcatel-Lucent Enterprise and partners unveil new smart city use cases

The converged solution showcases end-to-end interoperability for smart lighting, smart waste management and video surveillance.

Alcatel-Lucent Enterprise, a leading provider of communications, networking and cloud solutions tailored to customers’ industries, has partnered with global smart city application experts (Multitech, Wellness TechGroup, Moonoff and Axis Communications) to deliver a converged solution showcasing interoperable smart city use cases. All partners are joining the project under the ‘Developer & Solution Partner Program’ DSPP[1]

The smart lighting, waste management and video surveillance use cases are built using Alcatel-Lucent Enterprise’s network fabric, specialised hardened switch and Alcatel-Lucent Enterprise Rainbow™ Workflow for automation. The solution uses the market-leading IoT gateway from MultiTech and leverages smart city applications from the Wellness TechGroup, smart light by Moonof and Video solutions by Axis Communications.

“A smart city is all about connecting devices, data and people to improve efficiency. To make this happen, integration and cooperation are key. This interoperable ecosystem showcases end-to-end smart city use cases running on a network infrastructure that has made its proof in real-life smart city situations”, says Fatima Elleouet, Alcatel-Lucent Enterprise Government & Smart city Director. “The Alcatel-Lucent Enterprise Digital Age Networking provides autonomous actions such as plug-and-play for IoT devices and security with IoT Containment. Workflow automation is ensured by the Alcatel-Lucent Enterprise Rainbow Workflow engine that seamlessly adapts to the ever-changing requirements of today’s smart cities.”

Smart lighting

In addition to the Alcatel-Lucent Enterprise Rainbow Workflow, The Smart City Lighting use case integrates with the Wellness TechGroup’s WeLight Smart Lighting solution. The WeLight Manager platform regulates energy consumption, to maximise the potential of the lighting infrastructure. WeLight is also used to configure, manage and monitor LED smart lights powered by Moonoff. If the lighting device detects an issue, such as need for replacement, it notifies the platform, which utilises Alcatel-Lucent Enterprise Rainbow Workflow, to alert the staff responsible.

“Outdoor luminaires have become strategic in the smart city concept due to the use of the lighting structure. This enables the integration of different components to provide intelligence and efficiency to our cities. Moonoff’s contribution to this interoperable system has been the design and adaptation of our TESLA Series luminaires to offer an effective lighting solution,” says Alberto Picón, Commercial Director, Moonoff.

Smart waste management

The Smart Waste Management use case leverages a smart waste bin sensor to detect events, such as a full bin, and notifies the management platform, Quamtra Manager by Wellness TechGroup. Quamtra uses Alcatel-Lucent Enterprise Rainbow Workflow to trigger an alert to the waste management personnel to pick up the waste from full bins; streamlining the process and reducing cost.

According to David García Ternero CEO of Wellness TechGroup, “The path to a better world starts by making more sustainable and livable cities for their citizens. Our partnership with Alcatel-Lucent Enterprise means a giant leap towards a common vision of more efficient and user-centric public services powered by smart technologies.”

Smart video surveillance

The smart video surveillance use case uses network video technology developed by Axis Communications. The network cameras detect an emergency event requiring the intervention of emergency service agencies. The event is sent to the Alcatel-Lucent Enterprise Rainbow Workflow platform that triggers alerts to the emergency services, so units can be dispatched immediately to the emergency site.

“We are happy for this cooperation with Alcatel-Lucent Enterprise. Smart Cities is one of our focus areas and with this partnership we are strengthening our eco-system even further in this area”, adds Jenny Månsson, Industry Segments Director, Axis Commnunication.

As of March 2021, on-demand demonstrations will be available. These can be requested through Alcatel-Lucent Enterprise.

“This demo captures exactly the kind of multi-use case scenario for which the MultiTech Conduit gateway was designed. Smart cities have a real opportunity to leverage the flexibility of our gateway to support multiple communications protocols. We’re pleased to give a hand, in enabling these and other important smart city use cases together with this community of technology leaders.” Nicolas Beaudoin, Regional Sales Director at MultiTech.
